Fernando Alonso is the man of the hour. The Spaniard is performing admirably in his Aston Martin and currently sits in third place in the world championship, behind the dominant Red Bull duo Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez. There is nothing but praise for Alonso, who can count on compliments from David Coulthard and Cyril Abiteboul. The former sees Alonso making a strong comeback in the sport, while his former team boss considers him the most all-round driver on the planet.
In "Formuła For Success", Coulthard states that Alonso's return to the sport is much more successful than that of the seven-time world champion at the time. "Michael Schumacher was considerably less successful after his comeback than before. Alonso doesn't have that issue. I think there are two reasons why he is performing so well. When he first stepped away from F1, he immediately went into IndyCar, other sports cars, and even competed in the Dakar."
But it doesn't stop there because in Spain, the Aston Martin driver can often be found on his own circuit. "He has a kart track, and you see him testing his karts in Spain. So constantly being in driver mode keeps those skills sharp in his mind. He acts and talks as if he's 23!" Coulthard believes that staying young at heart helps the two-time world champion to continue to perform well in Formula 1.
"Most all-round driver on the planet"
Not only Coulthard but also Abiteboul, the former team boss of the Spaniard, speaks highly of the qualities of the former Alpine driver, as they worked together. "Alonso needs no introduction. He is probably the most complete driver on Earth, and it is a pleasure to see him back at the top of Formula 1," he says, expressing his appreciation for the podium finishes that Alonso consistently achieves for Aston Martin.
