Fernando Alonso has primarily focused on where he could earn money, rather than which teams he could become a world champion with. That is the opinion of former Formula 1 team boss Eddie Jordan, which he voiced on the Formula For Success podcast. By primarily prioritizing money, Alonso, together with manager Flavio Briatore, is said to have made mistakes in terms of team choices.
"You can't look back, but he needs to reflect on himself and on Flavio, with whom I am still good friends," Jordan believes. "You have to remember that Fernando chased the money. He went to teams where he would earn more money, over other teams that probably could have given him a better chance of winning a world title."
Jordan thinks that Alonso regrets those choices "because he now has so much money. And sometimes, when you look back, you realize that you made a mistake. And if I were sitting in front of Fernando, I would say: you made a mistake. You still have a great career, but deep down in your heart, you know that you could have easily become a world champion five or six times."
Two-time world champion Alonso hungry for more
David Coulthard believes that it is precisely that mindset that keeps Alonso so competitive and seemingly unaffected by age, even at 41 years old. "The reason I think Fernando is so strong is because he is angry. He is angry that he has only won two world championships, and that anger is what drives him to still have that hunger. That is the most important thing. You don't lose speed, you lose the hunger. He still has that hunger."
